Single ride or day ticket?

A single ride is valid for one hour in one direction, transfers included. Day tickets run until 6am the following day and come as single or group versions for up to five people.

Rule of thumb: from two rides a day the day ticket beats single tickets. If you mostly walk around the city centre and take one ferry to the Landungsbrücken, singles are cheaper.

Rings A/B and the HADAG ferries

The HVV fare is split into rings: Ring A covers the city centre including HafenCity, Speicherstadt and St. Pauli, Ring B extends further into the districts. Ring A is enough for most sightseeing.

The HADAG harbour ferries are part of the standard HVV fare, so they're covered by a regular ticket – ferry line 62 across the Elbe is a cheap alternative to a classic harbour cruise if you just want to cross once.

Validation, checks and luggage

Paper tickets must be validated at the small machine on the platform or bus before travel; digital tickets in the app are valid automatically from purchase or your chosen start time. Checks are frequent and fines cost far more than the fare.

Normal luggage travels free; bicycles need a separate bike ticket.

Does the HVV day ticket cover the airport?
Only partly. The S-Bahn to Hamburg Airport needs the Ring AB surcharge on top of the Ring A/B ticket.
When does validity start?
At validation for paper tickets, or from your chosen start time in the app, so you can buy in advance and activate later.
Are the HADAG ferries included in the HVV ticket?
Yes. The harbour ferries are part of the HVV fare and are covered by a valid ticket for the right zone, including the popular line 62.
