The Elbphilharmonie ticket types explained

Visiting the Plaza at 37 metres is possible with a free timed ticket, reserved online or at the on-site machine. Concert tickets for the Grand Hall and Recital Hall, plus behind-the-scenes guided tours, are chargeable.

Timed tickets for the Plaza are the most practical option: you book a slot and skip the ticket desk queue. Guided tours usually combine the Elbphilharmonie with a look inside the concert hall and explain the striking architecture.

Best time to visit and entry rules

It is quietest right after morning opening and in the final hour before closing. The escalator to the Plaza uses fixed time slots, so leave large suitcases at the hotel.

No dress code applies to the Plaza, but the hall closes to visitors during concerts. In strong wind the outer walkway can be closed temporarily.

How to compare the prices properly

Check whether the price covers only the Plaza or also a guided tour of the building. A combo with a concert visit often beats two separate bookings.

The second thing to check is the cancellation window. Many providers refund up to 24 hours before the slot, which matters for fixed-time tickets when your plans may still change.

Frequently asked questions

Is entry to the Elbphilharmonie Plaza free?
The Plaza itself is free, but a timed ticket is still required. Concerts and guided tours cost extra.
Is a timed ticket worth it?
From April to October and at weekends, yes – waits of 30 to 60 minutes are normal. In winter the on-site machine is usually enough.
Do I also need to pay the visitor tax?
Hamburg's overnight visitor tax is billed through your hotel and only applies to stays. It does not replace a Plaza ticket.
